SUMMARY:Mind the Gap: Hormonal Contraceptives and Brain Health— Session 1
1: Workshop on Brain Imaging Studies
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThis workshop is part of our virtual "Mind the Gap: Horm
onal Contraceptives and Brain Health" series\, which brings attention to t
he brain health issues that women+ face and encourage the medical\, scien
tific and commercial communities to address them. In this session\, we wi
ll hear from two renowned speakers who will discuss pertinent topics relat
ed to hormonal contraceptives and brain health issues that women+ face.\nA
 genda\n11:00-11:05—Welcome Remarks\n\n11:05-11:25—Speaker 1: Dr. Cait
 lin Taylor\, University of California (SB)\, Santa Barbara\, California\,
  USA\n\n11:25-11:45—Speaker 2: Dr. Alexandra Ycaza Herrera\, University
  of Southern California\, California\, USA\n\n11:45-12:00—Q&amp\;A\nIndi
vidual Event Cost\nGeneral Public: $15\n\nStudents: $10\n\nWe offer you th
e option of registering for individual events or signing up for the ent
ire series. Video recordings of our conference sessions will be sent to al
l registrants following each event. Register for this individual event bel
 ow.\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\nBios\n\n\n\n\nDr. Caitlin Taylor\n\nBio: Dr. C
aitlin Taylor received her B.S. in Psychology and B.A. in French from Indi
ana University-Bloomington\, and her PhD in Neuroscience from Georgetown U
niversity. Caitlin’s graduate work focused on investigating age- and exp
erience-dependent modulation of coherent visual motion processing using fu
nctional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As a postdoctoral fellow in the
Jacobs Lab\, Caitlin uses MRI to investigate the effects of oral contrace
ptive use on the brain\, as well  to study the effects of sex hormones on
the hippocampus. She is the recipient of a 2018 SAGE Junior Fellowship a
nd the 2019 Harvey L. Karp Discovery Award. Outside of the lab\, Caitlin
is interested in sharing her love of science through science education and
outreach.\n\n\n\nDr. Alexandra Ycaza Herrera\n\nTalk Title: Neuroimaging
with Hormonal Contraceptives: Navigating the Complexities of Contraceptiv
e Phase and Progestin Generation\n\nTalk Abstract: Designing studies aime
d at understanding the impact of hormonal contraceptives goes beyond inclu
ding hormonal contraceptive users in the study sample. Research has shown
that a range of factors inherent to different hormonal contraceptive formu
lations can influence research outcomes\, including contraceptive phase an
d progestin generation. In this talk\, I will discuss what variables are i
mportant to account for when designing a neuroimaging study involving horm
onal contraceptive users and how to control for some of these variables in
your study.\n\nBio: Dr. Alexandra Ycaza Herrera is a Research Assistant P
rofessor at the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of S
outhern California. Her research explores the ways in which sex steroid ho
rmone fluctuations impact the stress response\, cognition\, and stress-cog
nition interactions. Dr. Ycaza Herrera is primarily interested in these re
lationships in women and explores how hormone shifts during the menstrua
 l cycle\, with hormonal contraceptive use\, menopause\, and postmenopaus
al hormone use impact the endocrine response to stress and the effects of
 stress on cognitive processes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJes
 se Lacasse\n\nBio: Jesse Lacasse is a Ph.D. (c) at Concordia University's
Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology in Montréal\, Quebec. His
research focuses on the effects of hormonal contraceptives on the brain an
 d cognition both in women and in female rats.\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;
