SUMMARY:Mind the Gap: Hormonal Contraceptives and Brain Health—Symposium
3: Hormonal Contraceptives and Risks for Women’s Health
DESCRIPTION:This symposium is part of our virtual "Mind the Gap: Hormonal C
ontraceptives and Brain Health" series\, which brings attention to the br
ain health issues that women+ face and encourage the medical\, scientific
and commercial communities to address them. In this session\, we will hea
r from three renowned speakers who will discuss pertinent topics related t
o hormonal contraceptives and its' relation to stroke and binge-eating in
women+. Attendees will also get a chance to join the conversation during a
Q&amp\;A period to close the session.\nAgenda\n10:00-10:05—Welcome Rema

n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\nBios\n\n\n\n\nDr. Ami Raval\n\nTalk Title: Oral Co
ntraceptives and Stroke: Foes or Friends\n\nBio: Dr. Ami Raval has numero
us years of experience in the field of sex hormones and mechanism of cereb
ral ischemia. Her ongoing research focuses on elucidating the mechanism(s)
by which the female sex hormone- estrogen - decreases the risk of cerebra
l ischemia in females utilizing in vivo and in vitro cerebral ischemia mod
els in rats\, and analysis of mitochondrial function. While working to ear
n her PhD\, Dr. Raval studied the effects of endogenous variations of fema
le sex hormones on non-reproductive tissues\; this knowledge helped her to
design studies to understand the mechanism of ischemic brain protection b
y estrogen. She is well versed in various in vivo and in vitro models of c
erebral ischemia as well as in imaging\, electrophysiology\, and behavior
and molecular biology techniques. She has also succesfully trained and sup
ervised post-doctoral fellows\, students\, and technicians to perform isch
emia models and the aforementioned techniques. Dr. Raval is also part of t
he University of Miami’s undergraduate neuroscience program\, and she is
involved in education of premedical and medical students.\n\n\n\nDr. Kell
y Klump\n\nTalk Title: Combined Oral Contraceptive Use and Binge Eating W
omen: Potential gene x Hormone Interactions\n\nTalk Abstract: Extant anim
al and human data suggest endogenous ovarian hormones increase risk for bi
nge eating in females\, possibly via gene x hormone interactions and hormo
nally induced increases in genetic influences. Approximately 85% of women
will take combined oral contraceptives (COCs) that mimic the riskiest horm
onal milieu for binge eating (i.e.\, post-ovulation when both estrogen and
progesterone are present). The purpose of this presentation is to synthes
ize findings of binge eating risk in COC users. Few studies have been cond
ucted\, but results suggest that COCs may increase risk for binge eating a
nd related phenotypes (e.g.\, craving for sweets)\, particularly in geneti
cally vulnerable women. Larger\, more systematic human and animal studies
of COCs and binge eating are needed. The goal of this work should be to ad
vance personalized medicine by identifying the extent of COC risk as well
as the role of gene x hormone interactions in susceptibility.\n\nBio: Dr.
Kelly Klump is an MSU Foundation Endowed Professor in the Department of P
sychology at Michigan State University (MSU). In 1998\, she received her P
h.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She complete
d her pre-doctoral\, clinical internship at McLean Hospital\, Harvard Scho
ol of Medicine (1997-1998)\, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at We
stern Psychiatric Institute and Clinic\, the University of Pittsburgh\, Sc
hool of Medicine (1998-2000). Her research focuses on genetic and biologic
al risk factors for eating disorders using both human (i.e.\, twin studies
) and animal models. She is particularly interested in developmental chang
es in genetic and hormonal risk factors and their meaning for the developm
ent of eating disorders. Dr. Klump has published over 250 papers and has r
eceived a number of federal grants for this work\, including 9 major NIMH
grants She also has been honored with awards including the David Shakow Aw
ard for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology from the America
n Psychological Association\, New Investigator Awards from the World Congr
ess on Psychiatric Genetics and the Eating Disorders Research Society\, th
e MSU Teacher-Scholar Award\, the MSU Distinguished Contributions to Honor
s Students\, the Price Foundation Award for Research Excellence from the N
ational Eating Disorders Association\, and the Leadership Award in Researc
h from the Academy for Eating Disorders. Dr. Klump is the first faculty me
mber to receive a MSU Foundation Endowed Professorship\, and she was the 2
007-2008 President of the Academy for Eating Disorders\, the largest\, int
ernational professional organization dedicated to the treatment\, research
and prevention of eating disorders.\n\n\n\nDr. Sofia Ahmed\n\nTalk Title:
Hormonal Contraceptives and Vascular Health\n\nTalk Abstract: Despite o
verall improvements in cardiovascular mortality\, the incidence and mortal
ity of coronary heart disease in younger women (25–54 years old) are un
changed\, highlighting the urgent need to investigate female-specific car
diovascular risk factors in the premenopausal population. The effect of ho
rmonal contraception on vascular health will be discussed.\n\nBio: Dr. Ah
med is a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of
Calgary. She is a nephrologist and clinician-scientist with a focus on sex
and gender differences in human kidney/cardiovascular physiology and clin
ical outcomes. Dr. Ahmed is the Vice Chair (Research) for the Department o
f Medicine\, Lead of the Alberta Strategy for Patient Oriented Research Ca
pacity Development Platform and Lead of the Women’s Cardiovascular Healt
h Research Initiative in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute at the Univers
ity of Calgary. Dr. Ahmed is an Advisory Board member for the Canadian Ins
titutes of Health Research Institute of Gender and Health\, a member of th
e CMAJ Governing Council and the President-Elect for the Organization for
the Study of Sex Differences.\n\nDr. Ahmed completed her MD and internal m
edicine residency at the University of Toronto and a nephrology fellowship
at Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston. S
he completed her Master’s in Medical Sciences at Harvard University. The
recipient of the 2021 Canadian Medical Association May Cohen Award for Wo
men Mentors and the 2020 American Society of Nephrology Distinguished Ment
or Award\, Dr. Ahmed is strong proponent of the importance of mentorship a
nd fostering excellence in the next generation of researchers.\n\n\n\n&nbs
