SUMMARY:Prenatal Alcohol Exposure\, Fetal Programming and Later Life Vulner
abilities: From Basic Science to Clinical Research
DESCRIPTION:\n\nDr. Joanne Weinberg is Professor and Distinguished Unive
rsity Scholar\, Emerita\, in the Dept of Cellular &amp\; Physiological Sci
ences. She is also an Associate Member of the Department of Psychology\, t
he Center for Brain Health\, and WHRI.\n\nJoanne’s research expertise is
in the area of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE)\, stress\, and neuroendocr
ine-neuroimmune regulation\, with a specific focus on mechanisms underlyin
g prenatal alcohol effects on fetal programming. Her studies have demonstr
ated that alcohol\, in addition to its teratogenic effects\, is an early l
ife insult that programs developing neurobiological systems\, including ne
uroendocrine and immune systems\, resulting in increased hypothalamic-pitu
 itary-adrenal or stress system tone\, hyperresponsiveness to stressors\, a
nd a pro-inflammatory bias. Together\, these alterations increase risk for
diseases/disorders over the life course\, the Developmental Origins of He
alth and Disease” (DOHaD) concept.\n\nIn her research\, Joanne has devel
oped rodent models to examine brain-biology-behavior relationships from pr
enatal life through adulthood\, utilizing a broad multidisciplinary approa
ch to tackle problems from the molecular to the behavioral level. Her rece
nt studies have translated findings from the animal to human populations.
These studies have elucidated a link between maternal alcohol consumption\
, inflammation\, alcohol exposure of the fetus\, and child outcomes. Curre
nt research is examining health\, immune function\, and adaptive and funct
ional outcomes in children from birth through adulthood who were exposed t
 o alcohol in utero.\n\n&nbsp\;
