Holly Ewanyshyn Women’s Health Equity Graduate Research Award
Awards totaling $2,000 have been made annually from donors, for Faculty of Medicine research-stream graduate students, or research-stream graduate students supervised by Faculty of Medicine supervisors, researching disease pathogenesis in women or female models of disease. Preference will be given to students whose research or research proposals pertain to conditions that have historically received inadequate attention in terms of sex and gender differences.
This award recognizes the work of Holly Ewanyshyn who has gained intimate knowledge of the disparities in the approach to healthcare for women, not only through her career as a physiotherapist but also as a woman living with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This fund recognizes and supports research that is taking action on these disparities as Holly believes a more equitable health care future for women is necessary and possible. This award aims to assist the medical community to better understand how sex and/or gender affects women’s health and ultimately help women live longer, healthier lives. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Medicine, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. (First award available for the 2024/2025 winter session).
“As a healthcare professional and a patient, I witnessed significant discrepancies in women’s health. After 20 years of conversations with other health care providers, patients, and loved ones, I recognized that the ability to access effective health management is decreased just by simply being female. My cancer diagnosis inspired me to try to create something that mattered and because my cancer is not curable at this time, I was trying to find a way to leave the world a better place in some way, shape, or form. My goal for this award is to encourage research in women’s health and ultimately help women live healthier and happier lives.”
