Congratulations to our 2024 Holly Ewanyshyn Women’s Health Equity Graduate Research Award recipient!
We are thrilled to announce that Bonnie Lee, a PhD candidate in Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia, has been awarded the Holly Ewanyshyn Women’s Health Equity Graduate Research Award. This award recognizes outstanding research in disease pathogenesis in women or female models of disease.
Bonnie’s research informs on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease in females by exploring how parity—pregnancy and parenthood—interacts with APOEε4 genotype to influence neuroplasticity and inflammation in a rat model of AD risk. Despite the rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and the increasing number of nulliparous women, there is a significant gap in understanding how reproductive history affects the aging brain and contributes to Alzheimer’s disease risk. To our knowledge, the proposed research is the first to examine the long-term influences of parity and APOEε4 genotype on brain biomarkers implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The findings of this work will provide critical insights into the manifestation and progression of AD in females.
