Caitlin MacRae

Caitlin is a new PhD student in the Centre for Neuroendocrinology at The University of Otago, New Zealand. She completed her Master of Biomedical Science at The University of Auckland, investigating sex differences in novel weight loss therapeutics, before making the move to study the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In particular, Caitlin will be investigating how prenatal androgen excess may rewire key neuronal circuits controlling fertility, increasing their activity and the downstream consequences. Caitlin is an expert in small rodent models and will be using intersectional transgenic approaches to remove the androgen receptor from specific brain regions and cell types to further unravel the complex circuity altered in the PCOS-like mouse brain. She is passionate about improving our understanding of diseases which impact women’s reproductive and metabolic health, and more broadly in ensuring that biomedical research includes sex as a critical variable in order to progress health equity.
