Claudia Paarmann-Chien

Dr. Claudia Paarmann-Chien (née Chien) is a Neuroscientist and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) PI at the Experimental and Clinical Research Center, NeuroCure Clinical Research Center, and Department of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the Charité- University Hospital Berlin, Germany.

Her research is focused on imaging correlates of long-term disability in neuroinflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, using advanced statistical methods and machine learning. Recent projects also include investigations into the neurophysiological affection in long SARS-CoV-2 (COVID19) and seizure sufferers. One of her main focuses at the moment is on sex differences and menopausal/hormonal differences in disease-related brain changes in early MS patients.

She is part of a Sex Differences in MS Consortium funded through the US Department of Defense and is part of the ENIGMA Neuroendocrinology Study Group.

Dr. Paarmann-Chien serves as a Member of the Standing Committee on Science at the CIHR, reviewer for scholarships and admittance into the Einstein Center for Neurosciences Berlin, is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers, project coordinator for several large international MRI studies, and a lecturer in Medical Neurosciences at the Charité-University Hospital.

Dr. Paarmann-Chien holds an honours B.Sc. in Biochemistry and Biotechnology from the University of Waterloo, an M.Sc. in Radiation Biology from Oxford University, B.Ed. in Science Education from York University, and a PhD in Medical Neurosciences from the Charité-University Hospital Berlin.
