Women’s Brain Health Initiative Trainee-Mentor Session: Dr. Karyn Frick
Women’s Brain Health Initiative Trainee-Mentor Session:
Sex in Research – What to Know and How to Get Started
Mentor: Dr. Karyn Frick, Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
The Women’s Brain Health Initiative Trainee-Mentor Sessions intend to provide students with the opportunity to meet and engage with sex and gender experts through informal conversations on diverse topics including professional development and research. To ensure an intimate and valuable experience, each Trainee-Mentor session will be limited to 30 registrants.
Please note that these sessions are for registrants of the Women’s Brain Health Conference (2020-2021). If you have not registered for the conference, you may do so here before you register for the session(s) you would like to attend.
Have you wanted to test both sexes in your studies but are unsure how to get started and properly design your experiments? Dr. Karyn Frick will discuss some methodological considerations for studying both male and female rodents, and relate how she started studying the effects of sex and sex steroid hormones on memory.
Dr. Frick is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Chief Scientific Officer of Estrigenix Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Frick has nearly 30 years of experience studying the neurobiological mechanisms underlying memory formation, with a particular focus on the cellular and molecular mechanisms through which estrogens regulate memory consolidation. She has published nearly 90 papers in leading neuroscience and neuroendocrinology journals and is the editor of the book “Estrogens and Memory: Basic Research and Clinical Implications” published by Oxford University Press in 2020. She is a recipient of the Society for Women’s Health Research/Medtronic Prize for Scientific Contributions to Women’s Health and the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern WI Investigator of the Year.
