Dr. Angela Jerath: The evaluation of health care delivery models is essential to enhancing patient safety, improving health outcomes and creating innovative models of care delivery. Dr. Angela Jerath’s academic research is focused on the analysis and evaluation of postoperative care and critical care models in cardiac and complex non-cardiac surgical patients using different research methods and technologies. Her research has received funding support from the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS), Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC), and Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Jerath works as a cardiac anesthesiologist and trained cardiovascular intensivist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She has undertaken specialty and sub-specialty training across 4 countries and has a Master’s in clinical epidemiology from Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Christopher Wallis: Christopher J.D. Wallis is a Urologic Oncologist at the University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital/University Health Network. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the University of British Columbia and his Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Epidemiology & Health Care Research from the Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation at the University of Toronto and completed his clinical residency in Urology at the University of Toronto affiliated hospitals and his Society of Urologic Oncology accredited fellowship training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His research focuses on leveraging a variety of epidemiologic techniques to understand the interaction between processes of care and patient outcomes, with a particular focus on patients with cancer and those undergoing surgery. Recently, his work has focused heavily on understanding the interplay between physician characteristics and patients’ operative outcomes.
Talk Summary: Sociocultural constructs of patients and their treating surgeon are likely to significantly impact patient survival and recovery after surgery. This talk will explore the intersection of physician sex and age with patient sex on outcomes after common and complex surgical procedures.
