Carla Elena Mezo Gonzalez holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Nutrition from the University of Nantes in France, and she is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Neurobiology of Depression and Aging Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Canada. Driven by her passion for understanding how diet shapes mental health —not only in individuals but also across generations— her research has focused on analyzing how maternal and paternal obesity can induce epigenetic and neurochemical changes in the offspring’s brain, potentially leading to cognitive impairments and depressive-like behaviors in rodent models.
She is currently working on three ongoing projects under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Prevot: 1) Exploring GABA’s role in modulating cortisol release in a chronic-stress mouse model. 2) Assessing a novel GABA signaling-targeting drug’s ability to improve cognition in aging and Alzheimer’s disease models. 3) Examining how maternal obesity influences GABAergic signaling in both offspring and postpartum mothers, possibly increasing susceptibility to depression.
