Eva Simoncicova
Eva Simoncicova is a PhD Candidate in the lab of Dr. Marie-Ève Tremblay at the Faculty of Health, University of Victoria, in Victoria, BC, Canada.
Eva’s research focuses on exploration of brain resident immune cells of an aged mouse which exhibit sex-specific features and response patterns in homeostasis and when exposed to inflammatory agents. As these cells are also vital for memory formation and cognitive functioning, it expands the scientific knowledge on the topic of connection between late-age infections and development of aging-associated cognitive decline. So far severely understudied, her research aims to highlight both age and sex as significant variables impacting disease onset, progress and treatment, advocating for a more standardized consideration of these factors in experimental designs in both pre- and clinical research.
Eva received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in the study of animal behaviour and physiology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. In 2018, she began her PhD journey at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine and the Center of Experimental Medicine of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. After receiving a highly competitive National Scholarship in 2019, she participated in a research internship at the Université Laval in Quebéc city (QC), Canada, which later led to her joining the Tremblay lab at the University of Victoria. During her studies, she has been recipient of numerous research and travel awards, including the BranchOut graduate award in 2022.
